"Barbie" Ineligible for Oscar Original Script Nomination, Academy Reclassifies as Adapted Script

According to Variety, Greta Gerwig's highly acclaimed film "Barbie" has been forcibly reclassified by the Academy as an adapted script, making it ineligible for an Oscar nomination in the original script category.

Despite initially participating in the awards season as an original script, the film, co-written by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, is now placed in the adapted script category, starting from the January 11th Oscar nomination voting. Similar instances have occurred in the past, such as the 2016 film "Moonlight," which transitioned from an original script to an adapted script due to its inspiration from an unpublished semi-autobiographical play. Other films facing such adjustments include "Selma," "Buster Scruggs' Ballad," and "Carol."

Movies with pre-existing character roles, including sequels, are often categorized as adapted scripts, such as "Toy Story 3," "Borat 2," and the sequels to the "Before" trilogy. Barbie and Ken, being pre-existing toy characters not designed by the screenwriters, led to the reclassification of "Barbie" as an adapted script in the Oscar race.
