In 2019, SquareEnix announced the development of the live-action TV series "The Final Fantasy 14," in collaboration with Sony Pictures and Hivemind. However, recent reports reveal the project's untimely demise.

On January 23rd, Dinesh Shamdasani, co-founder of Hivemind, confirmed on Twitter that the project is officially "dead." "We had Ben Lustig and Jake Thornton's fantastic pilot script, and they worked with our team to plan multiple seasons, but it was all vetoed. The scale and scope required for this project posed significant risks for anyone."

Jake Thornton also attributed the project's failure to the "pandemic": "Just as we started moving forward, companies began tightening their budgets." When asked about the possibility of producing an animated series, Hivemind's co-founder poured cold water on the idea: "To be honest, even more challenging, unfortunately, the rights have reverted to Japan."
