A Florida fifth-grade teacher is being investigated by the Florida Department of Education for showing a PG-rated Disney movie with LGBTQ+ elements in her classroom, NPR reports.

Jenna Barbee, who works in Hernando County schools, said she received a complaint from a mother of her child after she showed her students the 2022 Disney animated film "Oddworld." There is a gay character in the movie. But in general, the total duration of LGBTQ+ related plots is less than 3 minutes.

A spokesman for the school said the school board has a policy that guides them in showing films in classrooms. It is believed that Oddworld may violate the Florida Parental Educational Rights Act (commonly known as the "Don't Say Gay" Act).

Barbie later responded by explaining that she had signed a parental consent form allowing her to show the children PG-rated movies. She added that no children (or their parents) in the room indicated they had any objections to specific content.

"I chose this film because it was relevant to our class. Our class at the time was Earth science and ecosystems and how they interact—plants, humans, animals."

"The film's portrayal of LGBTQ is innocuous. It's just the usual crush, and in the entire scene, a little over two minutes long, there are only a few lines. The parents in the film kiss a lot. That's not even considered Bring it up, and that's the problem."
