French Painter Françoise Gilot Passes Away at 101, 40 Years Younger Than Picasso

According to several media outlets such as The Guardian and The New York Times, French painter Françoise Gilot has passed away at the age of 101. She was also famously known as the former lover of Pablo Picasso and was the one who ended the relationship.

Gilot was involved with Picasso for 10 years, serving as his student and artistic muse, and even bearing him two children. However, unlike many of Picasso's other lovers, Gilot decided to end the relationship herself in 1953 and reclaim her own life.

Her daughter, Aurelia, confirmed that Gilot passed away at a hospital in New York on Tuesday. Gilot had been suffering from heart and lung diseases.

Françoise Gilot was a French painter, critic, and bestselling author. In 1973, she was appointed as the artistic director of the academic journal Virginia Woolf Quarterly. In 1976, she became a board member of the USC School of Fine Arts, where she organized summer courses and held administrative positions until 1983. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, she designed costumes, stage sets, and masks for productions at the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
