Hayao Miyazaki's "What Kind of Life Do You Want to Live" grossed an impressive $5.56 million on its North American debut on Friday, surpassing the $4.73 million opening day box office of "Godzilla 1.0" a week ago. It may rewrite the record for the best non-American film opening weekend box office this year (11.4M).
The film also significantly refreshes the North American opening day box office for original Japanese animated films and Studio Ghibli: it has already exceeded the North American total box office of "The Wind Rises" (5.21M) and is expected to surpass the total revenue of "Spirited Away" (10.05M) by the end of the weekend.
In terms of word of mouth, "What Kind of Life Do You Want to Live" currently has a CinemaScore audience rating of A-, and a Rotten Tomatoes freshness rating of 95%.
