Got Enough Money? Spider-Man and Doctor Strange Copyright Dispute Resolved

On December 8th, news broke that a prolonged legal battle between Marvel and the co-creators of "Spider-Man" and "Doctor Strange" has finally come to an end. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel and the estate of the legendary comic figure Steve Ditko informed the court that they have reached an amicable settlement, expecting to submit an agreement by the end of this year. The roots of this dispute trace back to 2021 when Marvel faced a series of copyright termination notices from the estates of Stan Lee's brother Larry Lieber, Gene Colan, Steve Ditko, Don Heck, and Don Rico, among other Marvel icons. The contentious list of characters included Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, the Hulk, and Thor. While most issues were resolved this summer, one matter lingered. According to the same termination notice, Ditko's estate sought to reclaim the rights to "Amazing Fantasy" (including Spider-Man's debut in issue 15 in 1962) and "Strange Tales" (where Doctor Strange first appeared in issue 110). This not only involved the artwork and stories themselves but also targeted "any characters, story elements, or symbols reasonably associated with the works." Now, Marvel has reached a settlement with Steve Ditko's estate, and although the specifics remain undisclosed, both parties are reportedly content.
