Tony Leung Reveals the Secret to his 20-Year Collaboration with Wong Kar-wai: Inspiring Performances

On October 26th, Tony Leung shared the story of how he first crossed paths with Wong Kar-wai at the Tokyo International Film Festival's Master Class. This collaboration began when he was at a crossroads, feeling lost and unable to advance further in his acting career.

Tony Leung reminisced about their initial partnership in the movie "As Tears Go By" (the English title for "阿飛正傳") and said, "I believe he saw my shortcomings at the time. I was working with Maggie Cheung, who often completed scenes in just two or three takes, while I sometimes needed to shoot a scene over ten, or even up to 26 times. It was quite disheartening.

The director told me I didn't need excessive acting skills; his goal was to deconstruct my acting abilities, to let the character come from within. After watching the film, I realized that this director was brilliant at inspiring actors and bringing out their strengths. So, I yearned to collaborate with him, and that's how our 20-year journey began.

Wong Kar-wai's team, including cinematographer Christopher Doyle, art director William Chang, and a host of other talented actors, enabled me to focus on improving my own acting style."
