Authentic! Mario movie new character design based on Nintendo's abandoned draft design

Mario movie directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic revealed that some of the new characters were inspired by previously unused designs provided by Nintendo.

"Nintendo was totally open about it... They did send us character sketches that they had done years ago but never used. Mario's father was designed almost exactly from the original sketch. It's really nice to have that kind of support. Great."

The "Mario" movie focuses on the fantasy adventures of the Mario brothers.
