The epic fantasy novel "A Song of Ice and Fire" by George R. R. Martin has been published up to the fifth book (out of seven), and it has been twelve years since the release of the latest installment, "Dance with Dragons." Although George R. R. Martin confirmed the ongoing creation of the sixth book, "Winds of Winter," many fans are eager to see the progression of the story.

According to IGN, independent developer Liam Swayne recently unveiled his latest project: using the AI tool ChatGPT to write the final two chapters, "Winds of Winter" and "Dream of Spring," for "A Song of Ice and Fire."

Liam Swayne explained how he guided ChatGPT in the creative process: providing the AI with a prompt to generate an outline for the first chapter of "Winds of Winter." This process was repeated multiple times, resulting in the creation of 45 chapters.

Building on this foundation, the generated outlines were fed back to ChatGPT, requesting more detailed outlines for the same chapters. Through iterative operations, the story expanded from single points to broader plotlines, ultimately resulting in two books with a total of 1.2 million words.

Liam Swayne also highlighted the strengths of ChatGPT during the creative process. The AI demonstrated an impressive ability to continuously track information about a specific character, even in the context of the intricate and vast story and character relationships depicted in "A Song of Ice and Fire." Additionally, the language model provided narrative setups and created twists, adding tension to the story.

Regarding the future development of large language models like ChatGPT, Liam Swayne said, "The existence of large language models may be somewhat daunting, but this project has made me more optimistic about the future of writers and artificial intelligence. AI won't quickly replace unique literary works; instead, it can help writers patch plot holes. However, when making crucial plot decisions, the stories produced by AI can be quite conventional and uninspiring, which is one of the reasons why writers remain irreplaceable."
