According to Japanese media reports, the defendant in the Kyoto Animation arson case, Aoyagi, recently underwent a psychiatric evaluation. Doctors have testified that Aoyagi is suffering from a severe delusional disorder.
The doctors pointed out that Aoyagi began experiencing delusions around the age of 30, and these delusions have been persistent, significantly affecting his daily life. They believe that these delusions are the primary motivation behind his criminal actions. Aoyagi is unable to distinguish these delusions from reality and perceives them as genuine experiences.
In a previous court hearing, another doctor, at the request of the prosecution, conducted a psychiatric assessment and explained that Aoyagi was suffering from a "delusional personality disorder" at the time of the incident. This condition is closely related to his personality traits, and its impact on his criminal behavior is almost indistinguishable. Therefore, it is possible that Aoyagi may escape legal repercussions due to his severe delusional disorder.
