After being admitted to the Directing Department of Beijing Film Academy in 1959, he not only stayed on as a teacher after graduation but also became a highly respected figure in the Chinese film industry. He dedicated himself to promoting and cultivating documentaries in China, earning him the title of one of the pioneers of Chinese documentary filmmaking.

Even after retiring, he continued to serve as the head of the Directing Department at the Modern Creative Media College of Beijing Film Academy in Qingdao, engaging in teaching activities.

He was awarded the "Golden Candle Award" by Beijing Film Academy in September 1997, and in July 2016, he received the "Outstanding Contribution to the Development of Chinese Documentary" award from the China Television Documentary Research Center. In the same year's Sino-French Documentary Biennial Exhibition, he was honored with a "Lifetime Achievement Award" in the field of film arts.
