According to thegamer, the "Super Mario Bros." movie set a record for the highest opening weekend in 2023, surpassing Marvel's "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantum Fever." It grossed $146 million in the U.S. over the weekend and nearly $205 million over the past five days.
What's more, it has broken the previous record for the highest-grossing animated film in its opening week, "Frozen 2." This is a huge subversion, surpassing the record set by Disney. It also suggests that Illumination Pictures is very likely to launch a "Mario" sequel, because it can already compete with some established animated film series.
