Ruby Gillman, a timid and introverted 16-year-old girl (voiced by Lana Condor), longs to fit in with her high school life on the coast. However, she always feels invisible to her classmates. While tutoring her secret crush, a skateboarding boy (voiced by Jacob Whitesides), he seems to only admire her for being good at math. To make matters worse, Ruby's overprotective tiger mom (voiced by Toni Collette) not only forbids her from hanging out with the cool kids at school but also imposes a strict rule against swimming in the ocean.
