One-Minute Short Drama Chaos: Over 25,300 Productions Taken Down by State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television

With the popularity of short videos, one-minute micro-dramas have emerged as the latest trend, reportedly surpassing the scale of the film market.

According to estimates by Guolian Securities, within the ByteDance ecosystem alone, the revenue from micro-dramas could reach 22 billion, surpassing the annual box office of the Chinese mainland, which is around 50 billion.

However, amidst the flourishing development of micro-dramas, the content quality is uneven, giving rise to disorderly phenomena.

As reported, starting from late November 2022, the State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television (SARFT) urgently took action, dedicating three months to conduct a special rectification of online micro-dramas, achieving positive results. By February 28, 2023, a total of over 25,300 micro-dramas containing content such as pornography, vulgarity, violence, and vulgar aesthetics were taken down, totaling 1,365,004 episodes.

From March 2023 to the present, SARFT has supervised platforms such as Douyin, Kuaishou, Tencent, Bilibili, Xiaohongshu, and Haokan Video, releasing more than 40 announcements. They have collectively cleared more than 350,000 episodes (segments) of vulgar and harmful online micro-dramas, totaling over 20.55 million minutes.
