Set in a tumultuous era toward the end of a certain dynasty, amidst rampant turmoil and the dominance of eunuchs, the court official Cao Gonggong collaborates with Japanese pirates, causing havoc within the martial arts community of the central plains and even harboring intentions of rebellion. During this critical period, the seemingly external identity of Changhai as the head of the Magpie Knife Sect conceals his true role as a secret member of an anti-Japanese organization. Apart from exterminating the Japanese pirates, another vital mission is to uncover the traitors within the court who have conspired with the pirates. Simultaneously, Cao Gonggong has also identified dissidents within the martial arts community who oppose his rule, leading him to clandestinely monitor the activities of various martial arts sects.
To maintain a low profile and continue operating in secrecy, Changhai (played by Zhao Benshan) seeks out his twin brother, Changzai (played by Zhao Benshan), who resides in their hometown. Changhai urges Changzai to impersonate him. Despite being identical twins, their personalities and life paths drastically differ. The younger brother is a fearless hero, while the elder brother is a timid commoner. Faced with his younger brother's request, the apprehensive Changzai hesitates. However, he ultimately succumbs to his younger brother's promise of finding him a "companion," leading him to reluctantly agree to take on his brother's identity. Consequently, influenced by Changhai's coercion and enticement, the apprehensive Changzai becomes embroiled in a scheme where he impersonates his brother, stepping into a world of fantastical martial arts.
