Japanese TV Station Acquires Studio Ghibli, Producer Responds to Miyazaki's Age Concerns
2023-09-21
According to Japanese media reports, a Japanese TV station has announced its acquisition of Studio Ghibli. This will make Studio Ghibli a subsidiary of the Japanese TV station. Under the agreement, the Japanese TV station will acquire 42.3% of the voting rights of Studio Ghibli and will provide support to ensure the studio's continued operation. The contract signing and equity transfer plan are set to take effect on October 6th.
Regarding this acquisition plan, the producer of Studio Ghibli, Toshio Suzuki, has made a statement. He stated, "We have long been grappling with the issue of finding a successor, especially given that Hayao Miyazaki is now 82 years old, and I myself am 75." Suzuki admitted that although Hayao Miyazaki's eldest son, Goro Miyazaki, had been nominated as a successor, Goro himself believes that "it's difficult for one person to shoulder the responsibility of Studio Ghibli, and it's better to entrust the company's future to someone else." Hayao Miyazaki himself also opposes the idea of his son, Goro, taking over.
