Director Hou Hsiao-Hsien's Possible Retirement Due to Health Reasons:

According to the British film website Indiewire, director Hou Hsiao-Hsien may announce his retirement due to health reasons.

Reportedly, the 76-year-old Hou Hsiao-Hsien has unfortunately been diagnosed with dementia, forcing him to step down from the director's chair. His long-anticipated new film "Above the Shulan River" may face delays, and his 2015 film "The Assassin" is poised to be his final masterpiece as a director. Furthermore, he will be involved as a producer in a new film directed by his longtime collaborator, art director Huang Wenying, titled "God on the Roof."

Director Hou Hsiao-Hsien's Possible Retirement Due to Health Reasons:

The news of Hou Hsiao-Hsien's retirement was initially mentioned by film scholar Tony Rain at a screening event at the Garden Cinema in London. Subsequently, Indiewire confirmed this information, citing a close source to Hou Hsiao-Hsien. George Crosthwait, the curator of Garden Cinema, also explicitly stated that Hou Hsiao-Hsien "will no longer work in the film industry."

The report also disclosed that Hou Hsiao-Hsien's office in Taipei has already been closed, and his staff, including his longtime assistant Chang Zhuti, have been laid off. While this situation is well-known in Taiwan, there has been no official reporting of this news by Taiwanese media. Hou Hsiao-Hsien and his family have yet to release an official statement, and Indiewire suggests they may prefer to keep a low profile regarding this matter.
