Controversy Erupts as Official Barbie Account Joins in on Meme, Japanese Netizens Accuse Disrespect towards Atomic Bombing

Recently, the official Twitter account of the movie 'Barbie' received criticism from Japanese netizens for joining in on the 'Barbie Hammer' meme.

As both 'Barbie' and 'Oh, Benhammer' are released simultaneously in North America, netizens created numerous crossover meme images. However, some Japanese netizens noticed that the official Barbie account actively left comments under many 'Barbie Hammer' meme images, mentioning that it would be an unforgettable summer, and so on.

Japanese netizens expressed dissatisfaction with this behavior from the official 'Barbie' account, and multiple topics related to this issue trended on Japanese social media.

Today, Warner Bros. Japan issued a statement addressing the incident where the official 'Barbie' Twitter account's enthusiastic responses were interpreted as potentially trivializing the atomic bomb explosion. Warner Bros. Japan stated that they are currently requesting an appropriate response from their U.S. headquarters.

On the other hand, 'Barbie' is scheduled to be released in Japan on August 11th, while 'Oh, Benhammer' has not been scheduled for release in Japan.
