The movie "Poor Souls" is based on the novel "Creation of the Gods" by Scottish writer Alasdair Gray. It blends elements of realism, fantasy, and science fiction, reimagining the story of Frankenstein set in the late Victorian era. The lead character, Bella Baxter (played by Emma Stone), is an unpredictable, insatiable, and unconventional woman who also happens to be a female scientist with a twist. She escapes her abusive husband through drowning, and the eccentric scientist Goodwin replaces her unborn child's brain with her own, leading to a resurrection.
